The bachelor’s program “Egyptology\/Ancient Oriental Studies” is offered as a major (subject) (120 CP) and minor (60 CP) and includes three specializations, one of which must be chosen at the beginning of the program of study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major subject<\/strong> Egyptology<\/strong> in the Bachelor’s degree program “Egyptology\/Ancient Oriental Studies” in Mainz includes the following compulsory courses (additional course offerings can of course be taken voluntarily):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– 1 introductory seminar: Introduction to Egyptology\/Ancient Near Eastern Studies
– 1 introductory seminar: Introduction to Scripts and Languages
– 1 introductory seminar: Academic Papers
– 2 introductory seminars: Denkm\u00e4lerkunde \u00c4gyptens
– 2 introductory seminars: Middle Egyptian + practice class
– 2 seminars: Middle Egyptian Reading
– 2 Thematic Seminars: Egypt
– 2 seminars: 2nd language level<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curriculum also includes the two required elective modules \u00c4G 8 and \u00c4G 9, in which you can set priorities and thus sharpen your own profile. It is possible to fill the modules with Egyptological content (\u00c4G 8 tends to be philological, \u00c4G 9 more archaeological) or to choose courses from the other two specializations of the degree program, e.g. Akkadian I and II (AO 3 and AO 4) or seminars from the field of Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology (modules AO 2 and AO5). In addition, 4 SWS must be completed as part of the additional module “Supplementary Competencies” as well as a practical module. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final module, which consists of a bachelor’s thesis<\/strong> (completion time: 8 weeks) and an oral examination<\/strong> (30 minutes), is the last component of the degree program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A specialization must also be chosen for the minor<\/strong> “Egyptology\/Ancient Oriental Studies”. The course sequence for the major (subject) Egyptology<\/strong> corresponds to that of the core subject up to and including the module \u00c4G 5 and a minor module \u00c4G 6 BF. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-modal><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the program of study is to acquire basic knowledge of the cultures of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East, as well as specialist knowledge in the chosen area of specialization.<\/p>\n\n

The focus includes learning different language levels:<\/p>\n\n

In the Egyptology major, students learn Middle Egyptian – i.e. the ‘classical’ Egyptian language level – and in the major (subject) they also learn a second language level.<\/p>\n\n

In the major subject Ancient Near Eastern Philology (also known as Philology of the Ancient Near East, Ancient Near Eastern Studies or Assyriology), students learn Akkadian and, in the core subject, a second cuneiform language.<\/p>\n\n

The major Near Eastern Archaeology includes the acquisition of basic knowledge of Akkadian in the core subject.<\/p>\n\n
