How can archaeological objects be digitally documented and made newly accessible for research and teaching? This three-day workshop explores the 3D digitisation and digital documentation of the Ancient Near Eastern teaching collection at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.Following an introduction to the principles and applications of 3D digitisation in archaeology, participants will explore a concrete case study illustrating the use of 3D technology in archaeology and philology. Further topics include the scholarly documentation of objects, the collection of metadata, the documentation of inscriptions, and the use of digital models for research, teaching, and academic outreach.
The practical sessions will involve working in groups with objects from the teaching collection. Participants will gain hands-on experience in 3D scanning, document selected objects, and review and supplement the information already available on the collection’s website.
The workshop is aimed at students and staff from all disciplines within the Faculty of Ancient Studies (ALPHA) and is also open to students of the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU). It combines practical experience with methodological questions surrounding digital documentation and demonstrates how 3D models and structured object data can contribute to the further development of a university teaching collection.
