The transition from a subsistence economy to a productive economy – a pivotal moment in human history – is examined from the Late Glacial period through to the Early and Middle Holocene. Following a general introduction to global history, the seminar traces the emergence of the agrarian economy in the Middle East and its spread across South-Eastern Europe and the Western Mediterranean region to Central Europe. Particular attention is paid to the links with environmental and climatic developments.
The content of the seminar is closely linked to current research projects at the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA) in conjunction with the Pre- and Early History Archaeology section of the Institute of Classical Studies.
In the seminar paper, students are enabled to analyse and discuss current research issues in a nuanced manner. Participants are expected to develop a global perspective on the interconnections and to understand the distant historical roots upon which the current situation is built. The immediate practical aim is to acquire the methodological and theoretical knowledge required for a career in archaeology or environmental sciences, or to be able to apply this knowledge competently in other fields to incorporate the long-term perspectives gained.
The course is linked to a one-day excursion to the Neolithic site of Kapellenberg in Hofheim /Ts. as well as an excavation in the summer semester.
