Shortname: S:Bauten, Topogr.1
Course No.: 07.012.932
Course Type: Seminar

Requirements / organisational issues

This course is a combined Seminar/Übung. Regardless of enrollment, all students are expected to prepare weekly with readings, participate actively in the discussions, and to serve as discussion leaders. All students (S/Ü) will fulfill the Referat requirement with a poster presentation as part of the “mini-conference” at the end of the semester. Students enrolled for the Seminar will write a Hausarbeit in addition. The workload will be correspondingly higher for MA students (more discussion leading responsibilities, longer presentation, longer paper) than for BA students, in both cases following the Modulehandbuch.

Discussion will be in German and English; presentations and papers may be in either language.

Contents

What makes a place “urban”? How does a city compare to a fort, and what are their influences on their surroundings? Should there be a strict separation between military and civil spheres? Why is “urban” seemingly so important, and what happens to Roman ideas as they travel further from Rome? This seminar explores the concept of urban in the Roman northwest provinces through material, spatial, and social lenses. The emergence of urban places during the development of the provinces will be compared to their established presence in the imperial period and then to their changes late antiquity. The course will begin with a theoretical discussion to establish the conceptual framework, work through a series of case study sites, and conclude with a mini-conference during class to present and discuss the findings.
