Contents
How imperial expansion, conquests, and other experiences of crisis repeatedly reshaped the Near East from the Bronze Age to the Islamic era, as reflected in both the archaeological record and written sources.Conflicts and crises will not be understood in this seminar merely as destructive events, but also as catalysts of transformation whose effects are visible both in material remains and in textual evidence. The seminar examines interregional confrontations between major powers, internal social conflicts, as well as ecological crises and disasters from the Bronze Age through the Islamic period.
Rather than focusing on a detailed narrative of events, troop movements, or military technology, the seminar explores what wars and crises do to cities, landscapes, and people: how they are reflected in the archaeological and textual record, and what consequences and coping strategies emerge from them. Drawing on archaeological and written sources, the seminar considers topics such as changes in urban development and land use, population movements, displacement and return, as well as processes of economic and political adaptation.
Course materials and specific topics will be announced over the coming months.
