Contents

This seminar explores the archaeology of Ugarit, one of the most important city-states of the Late Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean. Located at Ras Shamra on the Syrian coast, Ugarit occupied a strategic position within extensive networks linking the Levant, Anatolia, Cyprus, Egypt, and the Aegean. Through the study of architecture, material culture, funerary practices, trade, religion, and written archives, students will examine how archaeological evidence contributes to our understanding of urban life, political organisation, economic exchange, and cultural interaction in the second millennium BCE. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between texts and material remains, the cosmopolitan character of Ugarit, and the city's destruction during the wider Late Bronze Age collapse. By situating Ugarit within its regional and Mediterranean contexts, the course offers a comprehensive introduction to one of the best-documented societies of the ancient Near East and to broader archaeological debates concerning connectivity, ancient economies, and spheres of political influence.
