The geography of the Ancient Near East has already been the subject of numerous studies and discussed in many articles. However, such analyses have mostly been conducted within the framework of modern cartography and with reference to contemporary cardinal directions. To gain a better understanding of the geographical worldview of those eras, one must set aside modern maps and the division of the world according to today’s cardinal directions, since modern geographical knowledge did not yet exist at that time. This seminar examines available sources to understand ancient conceptions of the world while simultaneously attempting to locate—as far as possible—the places in Elam and neighboring regions mentioned in the sources. For participation in the seminar, general prior knowledge of the history of Elam and its relations with Mesopotamia would be very helpful.
