Contents

This seminar is dedicated to the city of Thessaloniki, which, after Constantinople, was not only the largest and wealthiest metropolis but also one of the most important artistic centers of the Byzantine Empire. Thessaloniki’s patron saint, Saint Demetrios, achieved empire-wide renown; his sanctuary, with its famous mosaics, is considered one of the most significant monuments in Byzantine art history. Yet, Thessaloniki has far more to offer: Together, we will closely examine the city's most important secular and sacred monuments and their decoration from both an archaeological and an art-historical perspective. The city’s rich monumental heritage allows us to trace the development of Byzantine art across various genres, from the transition to the Christian Late Antiquity down to the Middle and Late Byzantine periods. In addition to architecture, mosaic art, and monumental and funerary painting, the seminar will also investigate selected exhibits from the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki.
