Contents

This course provides an introduction to the diverse field of biomolecular archaeology, examining the range of scientific techniques used to investigate past human, animal, and plant populations, as well as their mutual interactions within specific environments. Students will gain an overview of the methods used to extract and analyse ancient biomolecules, including stable isotope analysis, ancient proteins, ancient DNA, and lipid residue analysis. The course explores how these data are applied to questions of diet and subsistence, mobility, individual life histories, animal management strategies, and palaeoclimate, alongside best practices in sampling strategies, data analysis, validation, and an introduction to the analytical instrumentation underpinning these approaches (e.g. mass spectrometry). Key ethical considerations surrounding the destructive analysis of archaeological materials are also addressed. Each week focuses on a different method or application, providing both conceptual and practical perspectives on this rapidly developing area of archaeological science, and includes opportunities to visit laboratories and see how analyses are carried out in practice.
