Contents
This course offers an introduction to Akkadian literature through the close reading of selected texts in modern translation. After an initial overview of the historical periods and geographical settings of ancient Mesopotamia, as well as key concepts from literary theory relevant to the study of ancient texts, students will engage with a wide range of Akkadian literary genres.Readings will include epic literature, such as passages from the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Poem of Creation (Enuma eliš), alongside wisdom literature and hymns to the gods. The course will also explore more “practical” texts, including medical and divinatory writings, as well as therapeutic and ritual compositions associated with ašiputu (exorcistic and healing practices).
Through these texts, students will gain insight into the intellectual, religious, and cultural world of ancient Mesopotamia, while developing critical skills for the interpretation of premodern literary traditions.
