This course is designed as a proseminar. However, MA students in ProvRom Archaeology or Classical Archaeology may enroll in the seminar format. Course requirements for MA students will be correspondingly more demanding (additional discussion meetings scheduled outside of the regular seminar time, longer and more detailed presentation, longer written assignment).
Expected of all students:
1. Attendance and active participation in the seminar and discussion
2. Weekly reading and preparation for discussion
3. Presentation including preparation meeting with instructor (min. two weeks before)
4. Written assignment
5. Enthusiasm and willingness to learn
Language:
This course will run in both German and English. The majority of the readings will be in English, the discussion and presentations may be in both languages.
Contents
This proseminar will offer an introduction to the fundamentals of archaeological fieldwork and research. The aim of the course is to develop familiarity with a broad range of methods and sources of evidence applicable to an archaeological site. Topics include excavation and stratigraphy, small finds, ceramics, environmental materials, and more. To illustrate each aspect, the course will study the the extensively excavated fort of Vindolanda, on the northern frontier of Roman Britain. The proseminar will provide an introduction to the broad themes of the Roman military and frontier life, as seen through the evidence from this particular site. Careful evaluation of Vindolanda’s exceptional archaeological evidence will offer a deeper understanding of a site and its material culture. This unique case study facilitates a broad overview of archaeological evidence, its potentials and its limitations, that can be translated across cultures and contexts.The course is also offered as seminar for MA students studying ProvRom or Classial Archaeology. The course will follow the same survey of methods and evidence but MA students will be expected to read and engage more deeply with the site and its material.
