Requirements / organisational issues

In addition to regular and active participation (both in groups as well as individual work with small assignments designed to stimulate reflection on concepts that are covered during the course) the coursework also requires participants to give a short presentation (approx. 10-15 minutes).
The coursework will be available on Moodle. A reference collection with essential literature is available in the Egyptology library (not available for loan).
At the end of the semester, the knowledge of the participants will be tested with a written exam.
Students from other disciplines are more than welcome to join the course. However, they are expected to actively participate during the course.

Digital teaching

The possibility to attend online will be discussed during the first lecture.

Contents

This course focusses on an initial overview of the ancient Egyptian temples, covering the period from the Early Dynastic Period until the Graeco-Roman period. By looking at selected examples, the basic principles of development of their architecture, decoration and functional components, as well as their connection to ancient Egyptian theological concepts will be discussed. In addition, selected temple equipment will be discussed. Students will also gain an insight into the history of research and the first methods of Egyptian archaeology and object analysis.
