According to popular belief, archaeology is a relatively young science. This view seems entirely understandable from an academic perspective, as specific archaeological departments, emancipated from other disciplines, were not established until the 19th century. However, if we consider archaeology not in terms of its institutional conditions, but from the perspective of its subjects and questions, its beginnings go back a long way.The lecture briefly touches on the perception of Roman imperial monuments during the Middle Ages – the prehistory and early history, as it were, of what was then a rapidly growing interest in the material legacy. Its reception at that time paralleled the veneration of Homer that began in the 14th century.
One thematic focus is on the transformation of the understanding of antiquity from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, and the “scientification” of the subject into the 20th century is also examined from various perspectives.
The plan was to present various monumental genres in parallel. However, during the preparation of the event, it became increasingly clear that there was an incongruity between the visual arts on the one hand and topography and architecture on the other in terms of perspective and value assignments. The genres will therefore be addressed separately, with the focus on sculpture. This emphasis takes into account the humanistic interests of the past.
