Contents

In Late Antiquity, the Hellenistic-Roman poleis of Asia Minor underwent profound transformations. Political, religious, economic, and social upheavals from the late fourth century onward led not only to new forms of urban organisation but, under the influence of Christianity, also to a fundamental reconfiguration of the urban landscape. Using selected case studies from western Asia Minor—including Ephesos, Aphrodisias, Pergamon, and Miletos—the seminar is devoted to these multifaceted processes of transformation. Central questions concern continuity and change in urban structures, the role of Christianity in the redesign and furnishing of urban living spaces, as well as the loci of imperial representation and social interaction. The chronological focus extends from the fourth to the sixth century; beyond this, the Middle Byzantine period is also taken into account in order to shed light on the subsequent fate of these cities. Archaeological features and finds are analysed collectively in order to capture the dynamics of urban development in Late Antique and Byzantine times.
