Requirements / organisational issues
In addition to regular and active participation (both in groups as well as individual work with small assignments designed to stimulate reflection on concepts that are covered during the course) the coursework also requires participants to give a short presentation (approx. 10-15 minutes).The coursework will be available on Moodle. A reference collection with essential literature is available in the Egyptology library (not available for loan).
At the end of the semester, the knowledge of the participants will be tested with a written exam.
Students from other areas are more than welcome to join the course. However, they are expected to actively participate during the course.

Contents
This course focusses on an initial overview of the royal and private tombs of Ancient Egypt, covering the period from the Early Dynastic Period until the Greco-Roman period (e.g. pyramids, rock tombs, mastabas, etc.). By looking at selected examples, the basic principles and development of funerary architecture, its decorative programs and functional components as well as their connection with Ancient Egyptian theological concepts will be discussed. In addition, selected tomb equipment (e.g. coffins, funerary sculptures, stelae, models, etc.) will be covered. Students will also gain an insight into the history of research and the first methods of Egyptian archaeology and object analysis.Additional information
