Contents

This course combines an introduction to archival work with hands-on research in the archives of the Vindolanda Trust. Based in the Vindolanda Roman Fort Museum at Chesterholm, participants will learn about the Vindolanda Trust collections, including the legacies of individual academics and the archaeological archive from the site’s excavation. The course will also cover the basic principles of archive structure and organization, and participants will directly apply this knowledge while working on the organization of the Eric Birley Archive. Participants will undertake a small research project of their own design that uses the archive’s resources while on-site and produce a written report of their findings. In addition to working at the Vindolanda Trust, the course will visit other Roman sites, museums, and archives in the region.
