Contents

Neighborhoods shape the character of impersonal cityscapes. They encompass daily life and personal experience, with distinct features and boundaries that reflect the wide variety of people and perspectives inhabiting them. The Roman world was full of cities that can be studied as monumental landscapes or economic engines, but to understand those who lived there – their experiences of place – from their buildings and objects is an ongoing challenge. A neighborhood might be spatial or social, economic or religious, defined by social status or gender. This seminar will explore Roman urbanism through neighborhoods, discussing what they are, whether and how they might be identified archaeologically, and why they matter to the concept of place. It will combine case studies from across the empire with archaeological methods and urban theories to tackle questions of space and society.
