Water: Resource, Challenge, and Instrument of Power from an Archaeological Perspective
Water remains the most vital resource in the Middle East to this day.
Access to water has been, since antiquity, a driver of conflicts and population movements, a catalyst for urban and agricultural development, as well as for architectural and technological achievements.
This seminar traces the history of water use in the Middle East and North Africa from the earliest archaeological evidence to the modern era. It focuses on the technical aspects of water supply infrastructure and on social, geographical, and hydrological dimensions, including historical conflicts.
A second focus addresses the closely related field of agriculture and land use. In addition to examining the historical development of agricultural practices since the Neolithic period, the seminar explores topics such as irrigated farming, historical land-use patterns, and landscape reconstruction methods.
Finally, the seminar will also engage with current political disputes over water resources and discuss contemporary challenges related to water scarcity and management in the region.
