Contents

In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, Pergamon became the splendid capital of a kingdom within the Hellenistic world - the Pergamon Altar is the most famous of the representative buildings. In the 1st century BC, Pergamon and its territory peacefully became part of the Roman Empire, an unusual process. Politically and militarily, Pergamon was not one of the main players in the Hellenistic age, but thanks to the rich archaeological and written tradition, it plays a special role in research: Only there, and not in the far more splendid Alexandria in Egypt, can we study in detail the metropolis of a Hellenistic kingdom and its later development as a rich and culturally vibrant Roman metropolis. The course - in the form of a lecture and dialogue - will deal on the one hand with outstanding individual buildings and monuments, from the residence of the kings to the sanctuary of Asclepius (Aesculapius), which was generously expanded during the imperial period. On the other hand, following the focus of recent research, the expansion of the urban settlement and the relationship between the city and the surrounding countryside will also be discussed. The course will thus cover a wide range of topics, from the political significance of individual monuments to the technical organisation of a metropolis in the period from Alexander the Great to Augustus and beyond.
