We are the student council of Classical Philology. If you ask Wikipedia what exactly a student council is, you will find the following quote:

“A student council is an institution of student self-administration and representation of interests at universities and other higher education institutions.”

Sounds very complicated at first, but it’s not. We substitute all students of Latin and Ancient Greek for lecturers, the faculty and higher education policy in general. We also take care of student exchange within and between the subjects and are your contact for questions, concerns and grades. We are made up of students from all academic semesters and are always open to new ideas and suggestions. The exact composition of the FSR for this semester can be found under “Members of the FSR”.

Freshers’ week

This is where we welcome our new students and support them in their start to university life.

Student council evenings

The student council evenings take place regularly throughout the semester. This is where the students and lecturers of our subject meet for a cozy get-together.

IAW summer party

The summer party is the highlight of the summer semester. Lecturers and students come together in a cozy atmosphere to barbecue, enjoy the sun and talk about non-study-related topics in a relaxed atmosphere.

Next date: A date for the SoSe 25 will be announced.

Drinks are provided; however, we ask that you bring your own glasses, crockery, cutlery and barbecue food. A donation for the salad and dessert buffet is welcome, please sign the list in front of the departmental library.

Christmas party

Everyone comes to this celebration dressed up to enjoy the sumptuous buffet, listen to the choir and instrumentalists play music, sit together and chat over a glass of wine or Feuerzangenbowle. Choir rehearsals start about a month before the celebration. If you would like to sing along, look out for notices on the student council notice board and the seminar library door. There will also be a list of instrumentalists who would like to share their skills with us. We are also very happy about active participation here.

Next date: The Christmas party will take place as usual in winter semester 2024 on 13.12.2024.

Drinks are provided; however, we ask you to bring your own glasses, crockery and cutlery. A salad/dessert donation reduces the admission price by 1€, please sign the list in front of the departmental library.

General assembly

At the AGM, the Student Representative Council sums up what it has done in the last semester and is then (hopefully) discharged, i.e. it is confirmed that it has worked in the interests of the students and fulfilled its tasks. A new student council is then appointed. Other important matters affecting all Classics students are also discussed there, such as wishes and suggestions for courses in the coming semesters or proposals for the activities of the student council.

Next date: The exact date of the next AGM will be announced. You will receive further information by e-mail.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I log in for my courses?

You must log in for courses in all subjects via the JOGUStINe internet platform. The registration phases vary each semester. For first-year students, the period for logging in is usually during the introduction week. You can find out the exact dates on the platform itself and on notices that can be found throughout the campus. If you cannot find them or have problems using the system, you can of course ask us. Which courses do I have to attend?

You can find information on which courses you have to take in the individual modules here.

Tips

Check the seminar bulletin board, the seminar library door and the student council board regularly for important announcements and changes.

If you have the feeling that you have too many semester hours per week, then that’s the case. Latin and Greek are very labor-intensive. You shouldn’t underestimate that. It’s better to do one course too few than one too many!
