At JGU Mainz, the disciplines of ancient studies are represented in a density that is unusual for German higher education institutions. In Classical Philology (Latin and Greek), the focus is on teacher education in addition to research, while the degree programs in Archaeology, Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies provide both research and application-oriented courses offered in Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral studies. The close interlinking of the disciplines and their methods corresponds to the strong networking of the degree programs within and outside the institute, which benefits students in many ways.

The integrative and flexible concept of the new Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs “Archaeologies and Philologies in Classical Studies (ALPHA)” offers a unique combination of broad interdisciplinary training and in-depth specialist knowledge in the disciplines of Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Archaeology of the Stone Ages (Master’s degree only), Byzantine Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology: Greek, Classical Philology: Latin, Provincial Roman Archaeology (Master’s degree only) Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology and Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology.

In addition, the disciplines of Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, Byzantine Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology: Greek, Classical Philology: Latin, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology and Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology can still be studied as minor subjects in the dual-subject Bachelor’s degree program.

The photo library of Classical Archaeology was largely built up during the time of Frank Brommer. Photographs of all areas of ancient arts and architecture as well as topography are archived in more than 1,000 DIN A4 photo boxes. Some of the photographs already have historical value today. Recently, the ‘Ancient Sculpture’ section has experienced a significant increase through the partial acquisition of the original photographs for Peter C. Bol’s History of Ancient Sculpture. A further 380 photo boxes in DIN A5 format, in which the photographs of Frank Brommer’s famous ‘Vase Lists’ are stored, are also worthy of special mention. The photo library is housed in its own room, where seminars and practice classes also take place, and is open to all interested users.

The buffet will help against empty stomachs: The buffet is free to use for anyone who contributes something to the buffet. However, anyone who does not bring anything can also enjoy the food in exchange for €5.

As the Student Council for Classical Studies, we substitute the prospective archaeologists (f/ m/ d) in various bodies, including the executive committee, ZeFaR (Central Student Council) and the faculty council. We also form a bridge between students and lecturers and act as a mediator for problems that students cannot or do not want to deal with on their own. In addition to the mentors, we would also like to be a point of contact for first-year students if they have any questions or problems. (If you would like to contact us in this regard, click here)

Of course, this also includes the planning and implementation of regular events. For example, we organize lectures with invited speakers on various archaeological topics, the Christmas party, the summer party, film evenings, field trips and much more. We are the student council of Classical Philology. If you ask Wikipedia what exactly a student council is, you will find the following quote:

“A student council is an institution of student self-administration and representation of interests at universities and other higher education institutions.”

Sounds very complicated at first, but it’s not. We represent all students of Latin and Ancient Greek in front of the lecturers, the faculty and higher education policy in general. We also facilitate student engagement and communication within and between the departments and are your contact for questions, concerns and problems. We consist of students from all academic semesters and are always open to new ideas and suggestions.

Goal:
The goal of the program is a successful start to your studies:

Participants receive orientation on the study requirements and technical support in organizing the program of study. Students from higher semesters will give you impulses for the formal and content-related organization of the program of study and informal information about structures, processes and people. This gives you the chance to settle in quickly at the university and get used to the new situation, as well as to get to know students from your degree program and integrate into student networks.

The experience and skills resulting from the program will be helpful to you even beyond your studies.

Concept:
There is a simple idea behind the term “mentoring”: an experienced person (mentor) supports and advises a less experienced, usually younger person (mentee) for a set period of time. The mentoring relationship offers a special opportunity to discuss all issues related to the program of study and also to talk about possible mistakes.

Implementation:
In our program, advanced students act as mentors who pass on their experience to students from the 1st and 2nd academic semesters. Two to three personal meetings (in groups or individually) between mentees and mentors per semester form the basis of the program.

The mentors and mentees usually meet for an initial basic discussion after the introductory events. The aim is to provide an initial basic orientation and to review or design the course schedule for the semester. After two weeks, experience has shown that further questions / problems have arisen, so that it makes sense to arrange another meeting with the mentor. The time of exam registration is usually the time for a third meeting, where questions about deadlines and the scope of examinations can be discussed.

The mentors are also available in the meantime and for all other questions relating to the program of study. The actual implementation of mentoring always takes place by arrangement. Participants are not obliged to attend all three proposed meetings, they are only obligated to show up for the agreed-upon appointments. To a certain extent, the mentees therefore determine the times and topics of the mentoring program themselves.
